Tassimo Vivy, Vivy 2, Suny and Joy: what the lights mean

T DISC pod machines with three lights on the Start / Stop button: Status, Fill water tank and Descale

These four Tassimo machines share one light scheme, printed in the same troubleshooting table in each of their manuals: a Status light, a Fill water tank light and a Descale light, all set into the Start / Stop button. None of the three has a colour named in the manual, so read them by which one is lit and whether it blinks. The Vivy, Suny and Joy have an On / Off switch; the Vivy 2 has none, which is why its manual gives a shorter fix for a fault. The Joy adds a BRITA MAXTRA+ filter with its own cartridge replacement indicator. Bosch makes the machines, and the manuals send you to the TASSIMO careline or Bosch customer service for anything the table cannot fix.

Fill water tank light on

Water

Water tank symbol: steady

The machine thinks the tank is too low to brew. If the tank is plainly full, the manual gives two other causes: the float inside the tank is stuck, or the tank is not seated properly.

“Fill water tank lights up. There is not enough water in the water tank. Fill the tank with cold, fresh water as far as the max mark. Reinsert the water tank.”

What Tassimo says to do

  1. Fill the tank with cold, fresh water up to the max mark and push it back in.
  2. If the light stays on with a full tank, clean the tank and free the float, then check the tank is inserted correctly.
  3. The manuals ask for “cool, fresh, non-carbonated water each day” and say: “Do not use chemically softened water.”

Descale light on, or flashing

Descale needed

Descale light or symbol: flashing or blinking

The machine has counted enough use to need a descale. These four manuals treat lit and flashing the same: both mean descale now. Using filtered or softened water does not stop it; in Tassimo’s words, “even decalcified water contains low amounts of calcium carbonate.”

Fault or blockage

Several lights or symbols at once: flashing or blinking

A fault, not a reminder: the machine will not brew while both lights flash. The Suny, Vivy and Joy manuals give the off-and-wait reset first. The Vivy 2 has no On / Off switch, and its manual skips the reset and says straight away: “Please contact the TASSIMO careline.”

“Fill water tank and Descale are flashing simultaneously and it is not possible to prepare drinks. There is a fault on the machine. Turn the machine off using the On / Off switch, wait approximately 5 minutes and turn the machine back on. If [both lights] are still flashing, please contact the TASSIMO careline.”

Status light blinking and the lid will not open

The machine is still working and has locked the brewing unit, the lid over the T DISC. Forcing it open is what the manuals warn against: “Never attempt to open the brewing unit during operation … any escaping liquids will be very hot.”

“The brewing unit cannot be opened. The brewing unit is still locked. Wait until the Status LED has stopped blinking before attempting to open the brewing unit. If the brewing unit stays locked, contact the TASSIMO careline.”

No light at all

Off or no power

Several lights or symbols: off

No power reaches the machine, or (on the Vivy, Suny and Joy) it is switched off at the On / Off switch. The Vivy 2 manual gives only the first cause, because it has no switch.

“The appliance is not working and none of the display elements (LEDs) are lighting. The appliance has no power supply. Check to see whether the appliance is connected to the mains. The appliance is not switched on. Make sure the appliance has been switched on.”

Joy only: BRITA cartridge indicator not working

Water filter

Water filter light: off

Only the Joy has this: a BRITA cartridge replacement indicator that goes with the BRITA MAXTRA+ filter cartridge in its water tank. The manual’s one row for it covers the indicator no longer working.

“The cartridge replacement indicator no longer works. Press and hold the Start button of the indicator for at least 5 seconds. If the cartridge replacement indicator still does not work, please contact the TASSIMO careline.”
