SimpliSafe alarm signals: beeps, chirps and lights

SimpliSafe’s Smoke Detector is a wireless detector that reports to the SimpliSafe Base Station, and SimpliSafe gives its light in two colours: red for normal running, a recent test and smoke, yellow for something wrong with the detector itself, which it pairs with a chirp. The rhythm of the yellow chirp tells the three yellow states apart: once a minute with a steady light is the tamper switch, once a minute with a flashing light is a low battery, every 20–30 seconds is a malfunction. SimpliSafe’s newer Smoke & CO Detector uses a different set of signals, listed separately further down this page.

If it is sounding a full alarm: the maker’s emergency instruction

Smoke alarm

SimpliSafe: a red flashing light with a shrieking sound means smoke detected; move to fresh air as soon as possible. The Base Station and any Extra Siren sound with it. On a monitoring plan, the first primary contact gets an alarm text and a phone call from the monitoring center; on that call you can cancel a smoke alarm or ask for the fire department, and if nobody answers or cancels at the Keypad in time, the monitoring team asks the local fire department to come on its own. You can also ask for the fire department by replying “H” to the alarm text or from the alarm screen in the SimpliSafe app.

The SimpliSafe alarm on these pages senses smoke only. For a carbon monoxide alarm, follow its own maker’s instruction.

What SimpliSafe says to do about this signal

  1. Nothing to do; wait 5 minutes for the slow flash to return.
  2. SimpliSafe’s test is a press of the test button for 1 second, which makes the detector chirp loudly 3–4 times and the Base Station announce “Smoke Detector”. Holding the button longer can cancel the test.

What SimpliSafe says to do about this signal

  1. Take the detector off its bracket and press the tamper switch on the back with your finger to check it moves, then put the detector back.
  2. Twist it fully into the bracket until you hear it snap into place; SimpliSafe says the yellow warning should stop at once.
  3. If the light stays on, SimpliSafe says the bracket may be screwed down so tightly that its plastic has warped: take the detector off, loosen the screws slightly and mount it again.

SimpliSafe Smoke & CO Detector: its own signals

The 2-in-1 Smoke & CO Detector senses carbon monoxide as well as smoke, and SimpliSafe documents its lights in a separate article: its normal state is a green blink, not a red one, and smoke and CO are told apart by the number of red blinks and chirps. If your SimpliSafe detector blinks green, it is this one; the Smoke Detector above has no green light in SimpliSafe’s list.

7 signals, as SimpliSafe lists them for this model only; they are not mixed into the list above.
