5G icon at the top of a phone: what does it mean?
Your carrier’s 5G network is available. On a Samsung Galaxy the box matters: a filled box means connected to 5G, an outlined box means you are on LTE in an area where 5G is available.
This shape means different things on different phones — check which maker’s line matches yours.
What each maker says
- iPhone (Apple) — 5G, 5G+, 5G UC, 5G UW. Your carrier’s 5G network is available and supported models can connect to the internet over it (not in all countries or regions). 5G+, 5G UC and 5G UW are carrier names for 5G that can include the carrier’s higher-frequency version of 5G.

Telling it apart
5G does not by itself mean the phone is using 5G at that moment on every phone: Apple and Google both word it as 5G being available, Samsung separates connected (filled box) from available (outlined box).
