Oven-safe (with the maximum temperature)
The maker says the item may go in an oven. A temperature in the drawing is the highest oven setting the maker allows for it.
Market convention
This symbol is a market convention: no law or public standard defines the drawing, so each maker draws its own and the meaning is whatever that maker says it is. This page follows 2 makers’ and retailers’ own keys.

- An outline of an oven — a box with a door or window and knobs or rings along the top — often with a temperature written in or beside it, such as 240 °C. Some versions add words such as NO LID.

What it does not promise
Oven-safe does not cover every part: lids, handles and knobs often have a lower limit or none. Pyrex says its plastic covers ‘must not be used in conventional or convection ovens because they will melt’. It does not cover the grill, a hob or a sudden move from freezer to hot oven unless the maker says so.
Where makers differ
Stellar’s pan symbol reads ‘Oven Safe to 240’ with 240 °C written in an oven door. Nordic Houseware Group’s oven icon carries the words NO LID: the box may go in the oven but its lid may not. Tefal gives its oven limit in words: a range can be ‘compatible with all hob types’ while its Bakelite handle is ‘oven safe up to 175°C’.
Often confused with
The maker’s stated temperature limits for the item: the highest it should meet and, where given, the lowest. Whirlpool describes the two-temperature version as ‘the highest and lowest temperatures a piece of tableware can withstand’.
